01 The verdict

A great second card. A questionable main account.

The Venmo Debit Card is not trying to replace your bank. It is trying to replace the one thing your Venmo balance is bad at: sitting there doing nothing. If your money already lands in Venmo, the card is close to a no-brainer. If you want one card that earns everywhere, keep looking.

Get it if

Venmo is already part of your money routine

  • Friends pay you back every week and the balance just sits there.
  • You already shop at brands like Amazon, Target, Walmart, Uber or DoorDash.
  • You want ATM cash without a monthly account fee.
  • You want a debit card without a credit check or a minimum balance.
Skip it if

You want simple, flat rewards on everything

  • You want the same rate at every store, with no bundle to manage.
  • You need to build credit history — this is a debit card.
  • You keep a large balance and want interest or a branch to walk into.
  • You spend heavily abroad — a 2.50% foreign fee starts Nov 4, 2026.
The catch

“Up to 5%” comes with three small words

The headline rate is real, but it only applies at Venmo Stash brands, only after $1,500 in monthly qualifying spend, and only up to $100 back per month. Spend $400 at those brands and you are looking at about $8, not $20.

See the exact tier math →

Our call: open it for the balance you already have, not as a replacement for your bank. Used as a spending card for groceries, delivery and rides — plus a direct deposit — it can quietly return $30 to $100 a month. Used as your only account, the missing branch, interest and credit-building will frustrate you.

02 Rewards

The 5% is real — but it is a ladder with a ceiling

Venmo Stash launched in late 2025 and is the current version of Venmo’s cash-back program. It has three tiers based on how much you spend with Venmo each month. It is not a flat-rate card, and the rewards are not paid on everything you buy.

1%
From day one

The base rate

Enroll in Stash and every qualifying purchase at a Stash brand earns 1% back — no spending target, no activation per purchase.

No minimumStart here
2%
$250 monthly spend

The everyday tier

Cross $250 in qualifying monthly spend and your rate moves to 2% going forward. Most regular Venmo users land here without trying.

5%
$1,500 monthly spend

The top tier

Reach $1,500 in qualifying monthly spend and you unlock 5% at Stash brands. It stays active for the rest of this month and all of next month.

$1,500 thresholdMax $100/mo

The ceiling: $100 back per calendar month

At 5%, you hit the cap after $2,000 of Stash-brand spending in a month. At 2%, you would need $5,000. The cap is generous for normal grocery-and-delivery spending, but it is the reason “5% on everything” math never works out.

Two ways to earn — and the fine print

You do not have to carry the plastic to earn. Venmo counts both of these:

Venmo Debit Card Tap, swipe or enter the card anywhere Mastercard is accepted.
Venmo checkout Choose Venmo at checkout in participating apps and sites.

Venmo checkout is not available at every merchant. Base cash back outside Stash brands is 0% — not 1%, nothing.

Five rules that decide your rate

01Pick one bundle. Stash groups brands into rotating bundles; you earn inside the bundle you chose.
02One “Everything” store. You also choose Amazon, Walmart or Target — one at a time.
03Switch every 30 days. You cannot hop bundles daily to chase a purchase.
04Refunds subtract. Qualifying spend is purchases minus refunds and canceled orders; transfers do not count.
05Tiers carry over. Hit a tier mid-month and you keep it through the following month.

Reading an old review? The rules changed.

Reviews from late 2025 say 2% requires auto-reload and 5% requires $500 in monthly direct deposits. Venmo’s current card page, Stash page and Help Center describe spend-based tiers: $250 for 2% and $1,500 for 5%. Because Venmo’s own marketing pages have not always matched, check the rate shown in your app before you plan around it.

03 Fees

Every fee, in plain English

The card itself costs nothing. The charges show up when you take cash out the wrong way, load cash at a store, or spend abroad. Here is the complete list, plus how to keep each one at zero.

A fee change worth knowing before you travel

Venmo’s fee schedule says a 2.50% foreign transaction fee begins November 4, 2026 on purchases and withdrawals outside the U.S. — even when no currency conversion happens. If you are planning a trip, budget for it.

04 Getting the card

From app to tap in about five minutes

There is no application form on this page — the whole process happens inside the Venmo app. Here is the exact path, plus what to have ready before you start.

01

Check that you qualify

You need to be at least 18, live in the U.S., and have a Venmo account in good standing with your identity verified. Venmo may ask for your legal name, date of birth, address and the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN.

No credit check, no minimum deposit
02

Open the Cards tab and choose the debit card

In the Venmo app, tap Cards, select Venmo Debit Card, then Get Started. Confirm your mailing address — the physical card can only be sent to a home address.

03

Pick a design and submit

Choose from the available card colors, review your details and submit. Approval is usually quick because there is no credit decision — Venmo is verifying identity, not lending you money.

04

Start spending before the plastic arrives

Your card details appear in the app, and you can add the card to Apple Pay or Google Pay right away. You can spend your Venmo balance online and in stores while the physical card is in the mail.

Add to your mobile wallet immediately
05

Activate, set a PIN, then turn on Stash

When the card arrives — Venmo says within 10 business days — activate it in the app and set a four-digit PIN for ATMs. Then open Me → Turn on Venmo Stash, pick your bundle, and set up direct deposit if you want the early-pay perk.

Cash back starts after you enroll

05 Beyond cash back

The perks that never make the headline

Cash back gets the attention. The everyday conveniences are why people keep the card in their wallet after the novelty wears off.

Paycheck up to 2 days early

Set up direct deposit and your pay can land in Venmo before your bank would post it. Timing depends on your employer sending payroll data early, and it can take a couple of pay cycles to kick in.

Split a purchase after you pay

Bought dinner for the group? Open the transaction and split it in the app. Friends pay their share back into your Venmo balance — the same balance that funded the purchase.

Freeze the card in two taps

Lost it at a bar? Freeze it in the app, keep your balance safe, and unfreeze when it turns up. Venmo also runs 24/7 fraud monitoring and does not charge for a replacement.

Works in Apple Pay and Google Pay

Add the card to your mobile wallet as soon as you are approved. You can earn at Stash brands with tap-to-pay before the physical card shows up.

40,000+ fee-free ATMs

MoneyPass is the network to look for. Venmo also lists ATM locations in the app, so you can check before you walk to the corner store and pay $2.50 for nothing.

Pass-through FDIC coverage

USD funds held at Venmo’s Program Banks may be eligible for pass-through FDIC insurance up to $250,000 per bank, subject to conditions. Venmo itself is not a bank and is not FDIC insured.

06 Compare

Debit, credit, or your bank? Pick the right tool

The Venmo Debit Card is not competing with a rewards credit card, and it is not a checking account. It sits between the two: a spending card for money you already have.

“Typical bank debit” is a generalization for context; your bank’s account agreement controls. Venmo Credit Card details reflect cards approved after September 24, 2026; older cards use a 3%/2%/1% structure. The Venmo Credit Card is issued by Synchrony Bank and requires credit approval.

Choose the debit card if…your Venmo balance is already where your money lands, and you want to spend it without transferring it out.
Choose the credit card if…you pay your statement in full, want rewards on everything, and want to build credit.
Keep your bank if…you need branches, cash deposits, overdraft protection, joint accounts or interest on savings.

07 The honest list

What we like — and what we would change

No card is right for everyone. These are the trade-offs that matter after the marketing copy is stripped away.

What works

  • $0 to own and $0 to keep. No monthly fee, no minimum balance, no credit check, no card replacement fee.
  • Instant access to money you already have. Spend a Venmo payment the moment it lands, without waiting for a bank transfer.
  • Genuinely useful cash back at everyday brands. Groceries, delivery, rides and household names — not obscure luxury retailers.
  • 40,000+ free ATMs. A bigger fee-free network than many online banks offer.
  • Early direct deposit and in-app splitting. Two features that make the card feel connected to how you already use Venmo.
  • Simple security controls. Freeze the card, view your PIN and track every transaction in the app.

What to watch

  • The 5% only applies at Stash brands. Base cash back outside your bundle is 0% — not 1%.
  • The $100 monthly cap. You need $2,000 of Stash spending at 5% to hit it, which is a lot of DoorDash.
  • International use gets more expensive. A 2.50% foreign transaction fee starts November 4, 2026.
  • Cash access has a price outside the network. $2.50 per out-of-network ATM visit, $3 at a teller, $3.74 to load cash at a store.
  • No credit building, no interest, no overdraft. It is a spending tool, not a full checking account.
  • Stash cannot be switched off once enrolled. If you stop shopping the brands, you simply stop earning.

08 Does it fit?

Four real-world scenarios

The same card can be a quiet win or a waste of plastic depending on how money moves through your life. Find the closest match.

RS

The rent splitter

Gets paid back weekly
Roommates send $600 a month. Spends $500 at Target, Amazon and DoorDash.
At 2%: $10 back per month.

A natural fit. The balance is already there, and the bundle brands overlap with normal life.

FL

The freelancer

Client payments in Venmo
Receives $2,000 a month. Puts $1,700 through Stash brands.
At 5%: $85 back per month.

Strong spending layer. But keep business bookkeeping elsewhere — this is a personal account, not a business one.

CM

The commuter

Rides and coffee
Spends $250 on Uber and coffee.
At 2%: $5 back per month.

Modest rewards. The free ATM access and instant balance are the better reasons to carry it.

TR

The traveler

Books and spends abroad
Spends $1,200 overseas. From Nov 4, 2026: +$30 in foreign transaction fees.

Keep it domestic. Use a no-FX card abroad and save the Venmo card for U.S. purchases.

09 Questions

Everything else people ask before ordering

Short answers, no runaround. If a question is missing, the official Venmo help center is linked in the footer.

Is the Venmo Debit Card free?
Yes. There is no monthly fee, no annual fee, no minimum balance and no charge to order the card. Optional services can cost money: $2.50 for a non-MoneyPass ATM withdrawal in the U.S., $2.50 for an international ATM withdrawal, $3 for an over-the-counter bank withdrawal, and $3.74 to add cash at a participating store.
Does it require a credit check?
No. It is a debit card tied to your Venmo balance, not a credit product, so there is no credit check and no interest. You still need to be 18+, live in the U.S., and pass Venmo’s identity verification.
Will it build my credit score?
No. Debit card activity is not reported as credit usage, so it does not build credit history. If that is your goal, look at a credit card or a credit-builder product instead.
How much cash back can I actually earn?
You earn 1% at Stash brands from day one, 2% once your monthly qualifying spend reaches $250, and 5% at $1,500. Cash back is capped at $100 per calendar month across the always-on Stash brands. Base cash back only applies at Stash brands — spending elsewhere earns 0%.
What counts as qualifying spend?
Purchases made with your Venmo Debit Card or through Venmo checkout, minus refunds and canceled orders. Transfers and some other transaction types do not count. Your rate applies going forward once you reach a tier, and it stays active for the rest of that month and the following month.
When do I get the cash back?
Usually within a few days of the purchase, and sometimes immediately. Venmo notes that timing varies by merchant and that most offers are paid within 30 days. It lands in your Venmo balance, not as a statement credit.
Can I use it outside the U.S.?
Yes, anywhere Mastercard is accepted. International ATM withdrawals cost $2.50 plus any operator fee. Venmo’s fee schedule says a 2.50% foreign transaction fee begins November 4, 2026 on purchases and withdrawals outside the U.S., even when there is no currency conversion.
How much are ATM fees?
$0 at 40,000+ MoneyPass ATMs in the U.S. $2.50 at non-MoneyPass ATMs and at international ATMs, plus whatever the ATM owner charges. Over-the-counter withdrawals inside a bank cost $3. Balance inquiries are free, but the ATM owner may still charge you.
How long does the card take to arrive?
Venmo says the card should arrive within 10 business days and can only be mailed to a home address. If it has not arrived after 10 business days, contact support through the app.
Can I use it before the card arrives?
Yes. You can view your card details in the app and add the card to Apple Pay or Google Pay right after you are approved, so you can start spending your balance and earning at Stash brands before the plastic shows up.
What are the spending limits?
Venmo lists a $3,000 daily purchase limit, a $1,000 daily limit across ATM, over-the-counter and cash-back withdrawals, and a 30-transaction daily limit. Limits reset daily; confirm the current numbers in your app.
Is my money FDIC insured?
Your USD Venmo funds are held at Program Banks and may be eligible for pass-through FDIC insurance up to $250,000 at each Program Bank, subject to conditions. FDIC insurance protects against a bank failure, not a Venmo failure. Venmo is not a bank, does not take deposits and is not FDIC insured.
What happens if I lose the card?
Freeze it in the app first, then review your transactions. Replacement is free. For suspicious activity, contact Venmo support through the app or the number on the back of the card. Never share your PIN, CVV or one-time codes with anyone.
Can I turn Stash off after enrolling?
No. Venmo says you cannot turn always-on cash back off once you enroll, though you control how you use the card. If you stop shopping at Stash brands, you simply stop earning. Limited-time offers may need separate activation and can stack with always-on cash back.

The bottom line

Your balance is already there. Make it earn something.

If friends already pay you on Venmo, this card is the shortest path from balance to checkout — with a cash-back ladder that can cover a few lunches a month. Order it in the app, add it to your wallet, and turn on Stash the same day.
